Project Description
June 12th - July 2nd, 2011

Springboard Danse Montréal is a unique project for advanced and professional dancers, age 19 and over, who would like to access the Montreal contemporary dance community.

The program is limited to 60 dancers, selected during auditions held in Montreal, Toronto and New York between January and March. The dancers live a unique, intense experience, working closely with as many as 7 companies and choreographers from Montreal and beyond, all internationally renowned. Over a three-week period in June and July, they participate in workshops, rehearsals, creations and auditions– in contemporary dance – wherein they explore different artistic approaches and choreographic processes to further each individual’s professional development.

On the final day of the project a showing of “works in progress” is presented in a theatre before an invited audience. Members of the Montreal dance community as well as choreographers and artistic directors from companies in Canada, the United States and Europe will be invited to this presentation.

During this annual artistic “rendez-vous”, the dancers are provided a rare opportunity to demonstrate their abilities in a context other than an audition, and to touch the pulse of the dance world through contact with several prominent and current creators. The artists not only engage in exchanges with the other participants, but also get a chance to be seen by many choreographers and company directors. For their part, artistic directors from the participating dance companies have the chance to see the dancers’ potential within a professional working context of daily classes, rehearsals and showings.

In addition to be seen by the 7 companies Springboard Danse Montréal is working with, choreographers and directors form outside the project hold auditions on weekends including the ‘’Cirque du Soleil’’. In 2008, 6 outside company auditions were held.

Over the past 7 years more than 85 participants have been offered contracts with outstanding international companies including: BJM Danse (CAN), Cas public (CAN), Cirque du Soleil (CAN), José Navas Company Flack (CAN), La La La Human Steps (CAN), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (CAN), Sinha Danse (CAN), Toronto Dance Theatre (CAN), DanceMakers (CAN), Le Groupe Dance Lab (CAN), Cedar Lake Ensemble (US), Company XIV (US), Sacremento Ballet (US), Sidra Bell Co (US), Compania Nacional de Danza (Spain), Bare Bones (UK), Sylvain Émard Danse (CAN), ProArte Danza (CAN), Coleman Lemieux (CAN), Gallim Dance (US), Abraham in Motion (US) etc.

Daily Schedule

Monday thru Friday begins with a 10:00 a.m. ballet or modern class.
The first week, the dancers are divided into three groups for the afternoon session of 3 hours, to work with 5 dance companies over 5 days.

At the end of the first week, artistic director, Alexandra Wells in conjunction with invited choreographers decide on casting for the following two weeks. This casting places each dancer with one of the 5 companies or choreographers, with whom the dancer will work every afternoon, for the remainder of the project.

This “work in progress” will be shown on the last evening.
In addition, project participants may opt to work on the emerging choreographer’s creations in the evenings.
